Bugs

Elizabeth discovered "bugs" last week. I may have accidentally instilled in her a permanent fear of bugs, I'm afraid. There was a spider in the basement and I asked Katie to kill it, and Elizabeth watched it. Then immediately after there was ANOTHER scary bug and I jumped on the bed to get away from that one. So Lizzy got really scared and started to cling on to me. Then when Katie tried to kill it, it jumped away and I screamed. (All involuntary reactions, of course.) So for the next two days poor Elizabeth was scanning every room even while she was sitting on the couch, muttering "bug," and refusing to be put down to walk on her own.

Then a couple days ago I was cooking and I felt a tickle on my arm. It was a SPIDER crawling on me! So I totally screamed (involuntarily) and jumped away. I turned around for Morgan to see if it was still on me, and assured me (a little too quickly) that it wasn't. So we were looking for it in the kitchen, and again I felt ANOTHER TICKLE ON my other ARM! I looked down and it was on my apron. Of course I screamed again and pulled off the apron as fast as I could. Poor Elizabeth was watching this whole thing from her high chair. It's a wonder I ever survived Bermejo.

Sand Doesn't Taste Very Good

We went driving around one Saturday to find a new park to play at. We found a park north of here that had some nice sand rather than dirt or grass. This was the first time Elizabeth had seen sand. Since Elizabeth seemed to be struggling walking on the sand with her tennis shoes, we took Elizabeth's shoes off. When we tried to put her down she did that "tuck in your knees" thing that means she doesn't want to be put down. She was afraid of the sand. So we put her shoes back on and let her play.

Later she sat down to investigate the sand. We had a Frisbee and she put sand it in and dumped it out several times. Of course no investigation would be complete if she hadn't used all the possible senses. She lifted the Frisbee up to her mouth like a bowl and tasted the sand. Immediately she turned her little face up to us with a disgusted and disappointed look on her face. Her lips and slightly extended tongue were covered in sand. She didn't try to eat any more after that.

Funny thing is that no matter the object, I have a pretty good idea of what it would taste like. The carpet, the desk, the cell phone, the dirt, the metal pole, the cement, the steering wheel (yuck). I promise I have not been sampling any of these things lately. When/where did I learn all this? I suppose sometimes kids learn what something tastes like before they know what it is called.

When my little sister Emily was a kid, she would eat butter. Yuck. One time I found her in the bathroom with her hands behind her back. When I looked at her hands they were covered in globs of butter. Yeah. This is not the only time she did that, either.

About one of Elizabeth's fears:
A few years ago my parents got Morgan a paper shredder. We use it all the time. But it is even more terrifying than the vacuum. The paper shredder currently resides in our room. One day I was sitting on the floor folding clothes a few feet away from the shredder and Elizabeth decided to be brave and go TOUCH the shredder. She giggled and thought it was quite funny to tough the shredder. I thought that maybe she had overcome her little fear. But she hadn't. I reached over and turned the shredder on for maybe a half a second. She tumbled backward toward me, fell over my legs, clutched on to me and started trying to climb up my body. Her face was all red and she was wailing for a few minutes afterward.

This is a story about Morgan's little cousin Gabe:
Gabe hates bugs. He's terrified of them. Gabe loves McDonald's happy meals. Gabe also likes to play with the coins that his dad regularly unloads onto a dish on his nightstand. One day the family went to McDonald's and Gabe got a happy meal with a toy. Of course he was very excited to see what the toy would be. He pulled out a little figurine of a BUG (From Bug's Life or some movie like that). He SCREAMED! Obviously this was the WORST happy meal ever served to a little boy. Later on Gabe's dad put the toy bug on his night stand to watch over his pocket change. Gabe is so terrified of that bug that he never goes near those coins anymore.

Elizabeth was playing with a 3 year old named Lexy who lives near us. Elizabeth was playing with a ball and Lexy came over and tried to take it from her with a shrill declaration "MINE!" Elizabeth reacted with a squeal - she's quite protective about balls. Lexy's grandma was nearby and said "make sure you share!!" Lexy then turned to Elizabeth and said, "YEAH! SHARE!"

We've been teaching Elizabeth not to throw her food on the floor from her high chair. She's done pretty well after the initial loud and tearful rebellion. The worst little re-occurrence was a couple days ago when she had a little plate of peas. She likes peas a lot - more than Morgan or me, in fact. She holds one up and says "BALL!" and eats each one individually. Anyway, she had a bunch left and supposedly she was done eating because she looked at us to make sure we were watching, grabbed a handful and chucked it off the side of the high chair. We said, "Elizabeth! Don't throw food on the floor!" Obviously the reaction she wanted, she smiled her adorable little smile and proceeded to grab handfuls and throw them off as fast as she could until we removed the food tray. She knows how to get us moving fast.

The Best Kind of Nesting.... Moving

What would YOU do for 8 thousand dollars?? The government has definitely found my price. We are closing on this house on June 4th. Sound familiar? Yup... that's our baby's due date. HAAAHAAA I really can't get over how "coincidental" this is. Am I going to survive? haaaahaaaaa..... we'll see!

Actually June 4th is the new due date we got at the 20 weeks sonogram. I never updated the little counter at the top of the blog page that is counting down to June 16th. And probably never will. =P

I really think that this house is much prettier in real life. The snow on the roof and twiggy bushes in that picture make it look rather sad. The neighborhood is quite nice with pretty houses. There's a nice big back yard and I'm SO thrilled about that. Elizabeth is going to LOVE it. AND... I won't have to worry about her throwing toys off the 2nd story balcony anymore. I imagine there will be some different concerns, but that won't be one of them anymore. =)

I'm also looking forward to the attached garage. Pretty awesome.

Lots of Great News

Morgan came home one day with a paper in his hands and he handed it to me. It was an OFFER OF FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT! WOOAH! So now he is continuing his job but now he's employed by the Church rather than a temp agency. WOOPIE!

So we've been looking for a house. Our agent Uncle Don is awesome and we have found several gorgeous houses, and are currently waiting for a response on an offer. I'll post pictures when we get the house!

Elizabeth says "shaw" which means shoe. She LOVES to wear our shoes. Sometimes she'll throw them (along with other toys) off our 2nd story balcony. =/

Sometimes she climbs around the car if she gets a chance.

This is Elizabeth waiting for me to finish in the restroom. We are teaching her how to say "fingers." She's got down "feet."

Elizabeth has learned to wipe her nose with a wipe and say "eww." I guess she learned that from me.

Streamlining Follow Up

This is my sock drawer before I streamlined it. Seriously. I always took Morgan's old socks that he didn't like anymore, because throwing socks away seemed so wasteful. So many of these socks are rejects - NEVER WORN by me! And really, I'm not a sock person. I like non-sock shoes. Even in the snow. (I know, weird.)

I figured out that Morgan's fluffy white socks really are much more comfortable then my cheapest-socks-on-the-rack. And it is not often that I wear them anyway - only when my feet are freezing at night or I wear tennis shoes. So all those reject white socks went to DI (if they had a match) or went to the trash. I was so disgusted that most of these socks didn't have matches. I've just been keeping them in case the other one showed up. What a waste of space. I only kept the socks that I LIKE. And here is what my drawer looks like now:

I can actually find my socks that I like now. No more stuffing socks into the drawer. Streamlining is so liberating. Feels almost as good as taking off my bra.

This is Elizabeth's room now. Holy cow it looks so much better. It was mostly a storage room before. Now it is a bedroom - and I love these cute pictures that Cherie brought us. I finally put them up. (And no, that's not food storage... it's a jungle gym.)

Elizabeth the Toddler

Morgan put Elizabeth down for a nap and later heard some weird noises coming from her room. He went in and found that Elizabeth had reached over her Pack N Play and pulled in her pink plastic shopping cart from Grandma and Grandpa.

We were all in the living room and I realized that it was rather quiet... so we went to find Elizabeth who had disappeared. We could hear her giggling and laughing from the hallway. We found her behind the curtain in our room looking out the 2nd story window. She was flirting with a group of giggling kids that had gathered by our window.

Elizabeth was running around and climbing on everything like she often does, and suddenly she stops, looks at us, looks down, and her diaper goes PLOP! And falls on the floor.

I was cleaning in Elizabeth's room and she found a pen on the ground. She grabbed it and ran out of the room. I followed her and found her already on the living floor drawing on the first book she could find. She also at another time drew us a splendid picture with a pen ON OUR COUCH. Our sweet Katie cleaned it off with hair spray. *phew* New rule: Elizabeth is NOT allowed to play with pens.

Later she ran out of the room and I heard some noises that I thought needed to be investigated. She had UNLOCKED the dish washer, OPENED it, CLIMBED in it, and was PULLING out the KNIVES.

Elizabeth was laying on the floor right next to the bathroom door waiting for Morgan to finish taking a shower. She got bored, got up, went to the dresser, opened the drawer, took out 2 of Morgan's socks, closed the drawer, and started putting them on herself. Then she got Morgan's belt off the closet door handle and tried to put in on her waist. Then went back to the bathroom door to knock and check on Morgan's progress.
